Achievements and Improvements
Below are descriptions of many major achievements which have taken place during the history of McCreary County Water District.
Maintenance Facility - This project will include the construction of a new maintenance facility for the employees of the McCreary County Water District (MCWD). This building will primarily be used for meter repair and pump repair. ($952,104)

Fibrotex PS and FM and WWTP Screen Replacement - The Project has two phases. The first phase, also known as Contract 37, addresses improvements to the pump station and sewer main that serves the Fibrotex USA facility. Contract 37 involves the installation of 6,375 LF of 8-inch polyvinyl chloride (“PVC”) sewer force main, 180 LF of 8-inch PVC gravity sewer, 240 LF of 16-inch steel casing pipe, three sanitary sewer manholes, a 500 gallon per minute pump station and valve vault, one magnetic meter vault, and the replacement of McCreary District’s sewage treatment plant’s existing screening system. Construction of the Contract 37 facilities would allow for increased wastewater flows from the Fibrotex USA manufacturing facility to McCreary District’s sewage treatment facility. The Project’s second phase is designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of McCreary District’s treatment process and involves the replacement of sewage treatment plant’s grit removal system and the construction of a third oxidation ditch concrete structure at the sewage treatment facility. Sanitary Sewer Collection System Expansion- Phase I - Project expands the sanitary sewer collection system from 1,140 to 1,445 by connecting 305 unsewered customers in the Stearns and Smithtown areas. The collection system expansion will consist of approximately 66,500 linear feet of PVC sewer line extensions of various sizes, 15 manholes, 275 grinder pump stations, 100 gallon per minute KY 701 Pump Station, and related appurtenances such as air release valves, and flushing connections. ($3,680,000)
Parkers Lake, Stearns, and Prison Tank Rehabilitation - Project includes standard maintenance and small upgrades to three (3) of our existing water tanks: Stearns, Parkers Lake, and East 92. The project also includes a new altitude valve for the Stearns tank, along with other small structural upgrades, including replacing vents and ensuring security of safety ladders. ($820,00)
Catron-Needle Road and Lakeshore Drive Waterline Extensions- Project will provide a reliable source of potable water to unserved customers in McCreary County. This project includes 8,100 linear feet of 3-inch water line that will provide a source of potable water to nine unserved customers. Remaining funds (if available) will extend a 3-inch waterline approximately 3,100 linear feet along KY 896 (Noah Dock Road) to serve additional unserved customers. ($270,00)

Marsh Creek Road Waterline Replacement - Project consists of upgrading and replacing approximately 34,000 linear feet of 6", 4", and 2" water line. This will include new valves, fire hydrants, water meter connections and service lines along the route. The project will improve service for approximately 550 existing customers in the Marsh Creek to KY HWY 92 area. ($1,440,00)

Water Meter Upgrades - This consisted of changing out all water meters in McCreary County (over 7,000 connections). The new digital meters are more accurate and can be read remotely by radio transmission. They also indicate constant flow and unusual usage which will help our employees and customers to more quickly identify potential problems.

Stearns to Smithtown Waterline Replacement - Project consists of upgrading and replacing approximately 13,600 linear feet of 6" and 4" water line with 8" water main. We will also be upgrading and replacing approximately 13,900 linear feet of 2" waterline with 4" and 3" water line. This will include new valves, fire hydrants, water meter connections and service lines along the route. The project will improve service for approximately 150 existing customers in the Stearns to Smithtown area. ($2,264,400)

KY HWY 92 Utility Relocation - Phase II - Project consists of replacing approximately 2,890 LF of 8-inch water line, 1,890 LF of 6-inch water line, 2,120 LF of 4-inch water line, 900 LF of 3-inch water line, 250 LF of 2-inch water line, and other applicable appurtenances. ($435,500)

Revelo to Stearns Sanitary Sewer - Project consists of 12,275 LF of 3 inch, 2 1/2 inch, and 1 1/2 inch sewer force mail to serve approximatley 58 new customers in the Bridge Fork Pond area, Farm Ridge area, and New Town area. ($666,667)

Water Treatment Plant #1 Upgrade - Phase II - Project consists of the construction of a new concrete clearwell in place of the existing steel clearwells, a new high service/backwash pump buildng, a new carbon feed system at Water Treatment Plant NO. 1, and replacement of the Rattlesnake ridge water booster pump station. ($2,097,000)

Whitley City Downtown Water Line Replacement - Project replaced 2,450 LF of 6 inch PVC water line and 280 LF of 2” PVC water line. ($77,687)
2013
Water Treatment Plant #1 Upgrade - Phase I - Project consists of the construction of a new up to date chemical feed building aloong with two new trains of flocculators and sedimentation basins, and renovation to pipe gallery NO. 1. The improved chemical feed buildings houses a new flash mix along with new chemical feed systems that have replaced the outdated existing system. ($1,860,000)

KY HWY 92 Utility Relocation - Phase I - Project consists of abandoning 195 feet of 4-inch force main, 4,335 FT of 4-inch water main, 930 FT of 6-inch water main, and appurtenances. It also consists of installing 195 FT of 4-inch PVC sanitary force main, (2) 4-inch sanitary PV and boxes, (2) sanitary tie-ins, 185 FT of sanitary open cut casing, 4,600 FT of 4-inch PVC pipe and fittings, (15) 4-inch GV and boxes, (5) 4-inch hydrants,1,4500 FT of 6-inch PVC pope and fittings, (4) 6-inch GV and boxes, 600 FT of road bore, 595 FT of open cut casing, 18 services, 1,850 FT of service line and 17 tie-ins and appurtenances. ($405,246)

Williamsburg Street Sanitary Sewer - Project provides approximately 62 users and help elimated the hazardous unhealthy conditions to the residence. ($1,206,667)
Water Storage Tank Retrofit - Project consits of installing tank missing systems within the storage reservoirs of the water storage tanks that require additional mixing of the stored water supply. The tanks that will require the mixing systems are Strunk, Stearns, Parkers Lake, Marshes Siding, Sawyer, Wolf Ridge, and the Rattlesnake Ridge tanks. The missing systems shall allow inlet water to be discharged at the top of the tank and system water to be withdrawn from the bottom of the tank reservoir. ($400,000)
Emergency Water Plant Power Supply - Project consists of providing three generators that would supply power to the Water District's water plant located at Flat Rock. The generators would operate the raw water pumps, the raw water intermediate pump station and the major portion of the water treatment plant. ($225,000)
Water Transmission Main Phase 5 & Revelo Booster Pump Station - Project consists of installing approximately 20,000 LF of 12" water transmission main with all appurtenances, installing approximately 33,000 LF of 3” waterline, hydro pneumatic pump station, and all appurtenances for approximately 38 new customers. ($1,826,000)

KY Hwy 92 Utility Relocation Project - Project consists of abandoning 5,460 feet of water main and installing 9,475 feet of new water main. ($405,246)
Holloway Cemetery Road Sanitary Sewer - Project consists of laying 13,000 feet of 6 inch sewer line along Holloway Cemetery Road which will provide for a larger transport system. This will benefit the northern portion of the sewage collection system. ($500,000)
Cumberland Falls State Park Water Main Extension Project - Project consists of laying 8,292 feet of 6 inch ductile iron pipe for the transmission of water. This will serve the Cumberland Falls State Park. ($540,000)

Water Line Extensions (New Liberty Area, Garland Road, Poff Road, and Creekmore/Privett Road) - Project consists of laying 33,600 feet of (3 inch and 4 inch) water main and constructing one (1) storage tank. This will serve approximately 50 unserved customers and 100 under-served users. ($1,280,000)
Kentucky 319(h) project - Project consists of extensive Watershed Based Planning in three impacted sub-watersheds of the Big South Fork - source water protection for McCreary County. ($468,250)

Raw Water Intake - Project consists of constructing a new Raw Water Intake with four pumps, each capable of 1 million gallons per day. ($3,124,000)
Transmission Main Upgrade (Stearns to Pine Knot area) - Project consists of laying 20,000 feet of 12 inch water transmission main. ($700,000)
Water Extension (Bald Knob, Wilson Ridge, and Beech Grove) - Project consists of laying 32,700 feet of 3 inch water line and a new hydro pneumatic pump station. this will serve approximately 38 new customers. ($500,000)
Telemetry, Security, and Water Systems Upgrades - Project consists of installing telemetry to approximately five (5) water tanks and four (4) pump station sites. ($84,888)
2005
Waste Water Project (Williamsburg Street) - Project consists of laying 46,850 feet of 2 inch, 3 inch, and 4 inch pressure sewer lines. This will serve approximately 75 new sewer customers. ($1,054,000)
2004
Water Transmission Main - Phase III - Project consists of laying 21,590 feet of 12 inch water transmission main and appurtenances. ($1,280,000)
Prison Emergency Set and Generator Installation - Project consists of installing and setting one (1) 150 kW diesel standby generator set and electrical connections. ($49,928)
Pine Knot Sewer System Improvements - Phase III - Project consists of laying 21,500 feet of 2 inch and 3 inch sewer main with individual grinder pumps. This will serve 87 customers in the Pine Knot area. ($650,000)
2003
McCreary County Water System Extension
Phase I - Project consists of laying 221,000 feet of 3 inch and 4 inch water line. This will serve 225 households in various areas. The project also includes the construction of two (2) 50,000 gallon elevated water storage tanks and two (2) booster pump stations. ($2,155,000)
Phase II - Project consists of laying 30,000 feet of 3 inch water line and 42,000 feet of 4 inch water line. This will serve 85 households in various areas. ($530,000)

Marshes Siding Area Sewer Expansion - PRIDE Project - Phase I - Project consists of laying 8,000 feet of 2 inch and 3 inch sewer main with individual grinder stations. This will serve approximately 132 customers in the Marshes Siding area of McCreary County. ($483,000)
Big Creek Area Sewer Expansion - PRIDE Project - Phase II - Project consists of laying 24,300 feet of 2 inch and 3 inch sewer main. This will serve approximately 190 customers in the Stearns and Marshes Siding areas of McCreary County. ($667,000)
Pine Knot Job Corp Sewer System Improvements - Project consists of laying 3,000 feet of 6 inch sewer main, installing a flow-meter, and installing a sewer lift station. ($356,000)
Stearns Sewer System Improvements - Project consists of laying 14,200 feet of 8 inch sewer main, laying 5,000 feet of 4 inch sewer main, constructing a lift station, installing a flow metering station, and appurtenances. This will serve approximately 70 residences and businesses in the Stearns area. ($1,730,00)
Facilities Expansion Project
Phase I - Project consists of constructing a one million gallon per day water treatment plant which is capable of treating two million gallons per day and appurtenances, laying 17,000 feet of 18 inch water transmission main and appurtenances, and construction of a 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank.
Phase II - Project consists of construction of a 1,000,000 gallon composite elevated water storage tank and appurtenances, laying 10,700 feet of 16 inch ductile iron CL 350, laying 10,500 feet of 12 inch ductile iron CL 350 water transmission, constructing a pump station, and appurtenances.
Phase III - Project consists of constructing a 700,000 gallon per day wastewater treatment plant, laying 42,600 feet of 10 inch sewer main, laying 3,400 feet of 6 inch waterline, installing a sewer lift station, and appurtenances.
Phase IV - Project consists of two million gallons per day Water Treatment Plant expansion and laying 64,000 feet of transmission line to the new treatment plant. ($22,940,000)
1994
Water Expansion Project
Phase I - Project consists of laying 109,206 feet of 3 inch, 4 inch, and 6 inch water line which totals approximately 20.68 miles. Line extensions will be installed in Sawyer, Indian Knob, and Nevelsville.
Phase II - Project consists of constructing a 100,000 gallon standpipe water storage tank in Sawyer.
Phase III - Project consists of constructing a 250,000 gallon elevated water storage tank in Strunk industrial park.
Phase IV - Project consists of constructing a 100,000 gallon standpipe water storage tank in Wolf Ridge.
Phase V - Project consists of constructing a booster pump station and appurtenances in Strunk industrial park.
Phase VI - Project consists of constructing a 200,000 gallon elevated water storage tank in Stearns. ($1,417,000)
Sewer Expansion Project
Phase I - Project consists of laying 96,000 feet of 1.5 inch - 10 inch sewer main and construction of a 100,000 gallon per day sewage treatment plant addition, for a total of a 200,000 gallon per day capacity. ($3,142,500)
Water Treatment Plant Expansion - Project consists of renovating the water treatment facilities.
Water District Office - Project consists of constructing a new McCreary County Water District Office building on Crit King Road.

Water Treatment Plant Expansion - Project consists of expanding the water treatment plant to 1.5 million gallons per day capacity.

Rattle Snake Ridge Water Expansion - Project consists of extending water line on Rattle Snake Ridge, constructing one (1) 50,000 gallon water storage tank, and constructing one (1) booster pump station in the Rattle Snakes Ridge area.
1987
Water Line Expansion - Project consists of extending water line along Highway 90, Barnett Road, Williams Road, and Ross Road.
Water Storage Tank - Project consists of constructing one (1) 150,000 gallon water storage tank in Marshes Siding.
Water Storage Tank - Project consists of constructing one (1) 150,000 gallon water storage tank in Pine Knot.
Dam Project - Project consists of constructing a “new” dam which increased the size of the Laurel Creek reservoir by approximately 52 surface acres.

Water Treatment Plant Expansion - Project consists of expanding the water treatment plant to 700,000 gallons per day.

Laurel Creek Reservoir - Project consist of the purchase and construction of the Laurel Creek Reservoir. Original Reservoir Size is 387.3 acre feet.
